Six years after the events of Bound by the Salt, Georgette remains in Cairnshore, living beneath the same cliffs and watching windows, close enough to hear the tide that once took everything from her.

Then a barefoot boy is seen on the outskirts of town, dripping wet. The Tidewardens call it a sign, but Georgette knows better: whatever has returned from the water has not come back by chance.
